On Skulls, Pirates, and Dental Health

I’m currently taking a certification in Compassion Key for Health, and as part of the training we exchange health-related sessions with our assigned partner.

One of my sessions focused on dental health.

When I tuned into my mouth and teeth, I saw a shrivelled skull with several missing teeth.

“It looks like a pirate skull,” I told my colleague.

We offered this image compassion, and it slowly evolved into a big, burly pirate. But he didn’t fit the stereotype. My sense of him was that he was actually quite soft and cuddly, and that this pirate life was weighing heavily on him.

He revealed that he had been born into this way of life and didn’t feel he had any other choice. He was desperate to please his father in order to receive his validation. The price was high: he could never be his true self.

(The story of my life… sigh.)

I gave him a lot of compassion for his struggle to be seen and for the pressure to keep his mouth shut.

He shared how much he loved life, almost to the point of lust. He adored sensual pleasure: food, sounds, touch. All of it made him feel deeply alive.

And then came the twist.

My past lifetime as a pirate had his own past lifetime.

In that earlier life, he was a belly dancer.

She was the best in the palace and got everything she wanted, including indulgent food. But all that sensual pleasure caused her to put on weight, and she eventually fell out of favour. In response, she vowed never to indulge in food again.

And what better way to stop yourself from overeating than not having teeth, right?

Well… technically there are ways around that. Like cake that just melts in your mouth.

Anyway, I digress.

Why am I telling you this?

1. If you have a recurring problem in this lifetime, chances are it’s an echo of something much older. Unless you address the issue at its root, you end up managing symptoms rather than creating real change.

But that’s only part of the learning.

2. Sometimes there’s a deeper issue at the heart of it all.

For me, it’s been hiding my true self.

The physical challenges then become a perfect vehicle to fulfil that programming. And so you may find yourself battling your body/ your weight/ dental challenges, etc when in fact your body is serving your subconscious desires flawlessly… and then getting battered for it too.

If my story stirred something in you and you sense there’s more beneath the symptoms, patterns, or recurring themes in your life, my practitioner training may be the next step for you.

This training is for those who want to work at the root level: with the body, the subconscious, and the deeper stories that shape our health, choices, and capacity to be seen.
